Winter Happenings

Last Tuesday night brought perfect snow for snowman building. I was so excited that we even had carrots in the house (not normally a vegetable of choice).

All you had to do was roll it along, and it picked everything up in it's path. Too bad we hadn't raked our leaves...

That is one adorable man, right there!

He was taller than me! And...maybe a little evil looking. But we love him anyway.

Highlights of a Holiday Weekend

Friday night spent with pals, unwinding after a looooong week.
Purchasing tickets for our quickly approaching VACATION. :)
Sleeping in on Saturday, doing very minimal housework, and eating m&m pancakes for dinner while watching Muppets.
Baking sugar cookies for the first time (on my own, that is) and enjoying my super cool cookie cutters.
Eating dinner with friends while being thoroughly amused by their offspring.
Having a late-night, date-night with Jono since we are alone in the house again.
Riding to the rose garden on Jono's motorcycle and enjoying a beautiful summer evening.
Sleeping in until ten-friggin'-thirty.
Eating lunch with wonderful friends, one that was home briefly from Alabama.
Enjoying the fruits of the grill (and other people's labor).
Much relaxation.

The makings of a lovely weekend!

Goodbye, Holidays...

Hello, January depression.

I Love My Family

My crazy, creative family.

We decorated sugar cookies on Christmas Eve, something I hadn't done since I was really little. Jono's extended family is small, so we were all together.

While the parents and grandparents played games, we decorated quite a few cookies. At first they looked normal (Trees, Stockings, Stars, Snowmen, Bells)...but with this highly entertaining group, the cookies began changing.

Here is my brother-in-law thinking about how much he likes his newly acquired sister.

Cousins!

Manly men decorating cookies!

At first the creativity was still holiday themed. The Rudolph is simply a stocking shaped cookie upside-down, and the penguin was made from a snowman cookie.

Then came the TV and video game themes.

The Little Mermaid has seen better days, I'm afraid.

A Bullet Bill, for all you Mario lovers out there.

My husband made this tribute to pac man. The two on the left are bell shaped cookies that he decided to turn into bad guys. :)

Mario above, Goomba below.

Another Mario enemy...

This fish was made from a sideways Christmas Tree

Cute bell-turned-mushroom

Rocket ship (formerly Christmas tree)

Can you see Australia?

Then things got a little deranged...

Vampire thing and a Tornado (both upside-down snowmen)

By the end there was a giant mess and a slew of cookies entirely unrelated to the holidays.
*sigh*
I love my family.

100th Post!?

I logged on to write about my birthday this past weekend, but noticed that this would be my 100th blog post. I'm pretty sure you're supposed to do something special for this kind of thing (like write 100 things about yourself). However, I think I would have a hard time coming up with 100 things that a) are interesting and b) you don't already know.
Since this post was going to include how wonderful that guy I'm married to is, I could write 100 things about said wonderful guy. However, I think that might embarrass him and disgust most of you. So, to find some kind of middle ground, I'll write about my birthday weekend and include little "how wonderful this guy is!" tidbits. Fair?

If that sounds absurdly uninteresting, feel free to stop reading at any time.

Friday was the start of breaking many a budget rule. First, many people at my work were going to lunch together, and I really wanted to go. Jono came along, since he didn't have to be at work. We try not to eat out a lot, but he's a wonderful guy, and didn't object to some yummy thai food. That evening we went to eat Italian with a bunch of friends in an early celebration of my birthday. I invited quite a few people, but expected most of them to have plans this close to Christmas. We ended up having 15, though. It was a lot of fun, even if the table was a bit too big to get to talk to everyone. Also, even though my wonderful guy had plans for my birthday the next day, he bought me dessert to go (as I hadn't saved room for any). Who pays attention to the budget during birthday weekend, though? ;)
Saturday, to my disappointment, I couldn't sleep past 7. So my wonderful guy made me breakfast while I played Nintendo. Then we hung around doing nothing until I fell asleep again. Until noon (whoops!). Then we bundled up with many, many layers and headed to KC. That wonderful guy had planned a whole day for us. We started with ice skating, something I hadn't done in a few years and he hadn't done since he was little. By the time the cold wind made us decide to stop, Crown Center's pretty Christmas lights started to turn on. My wonderful guy then drove us to the Plaza, where we put our name in at the Cheesecake Factory. We got to enjoy the pretty lights there, too. During the first part of our wait, he took me to my favorite place. It is so intensely wonderful, you should all go there some time. Then, that wonderful guy bought me my very favorite kind of cheese (unfortunately pricey...for cheese). After that we met up with Matt and Shelsey and the cutest nephew in the world, who had been shopping in the area all day. After a brief waiting period (in which we loitered quite comfortably) at Barnes and Noble, we had dinner at the CF. I must say, it was my favorite meal I've had there. Mmmm.
By the time we left it was after 9pm, so my wonderful guy and I drove to the airport to read and wait for his brother to get in. All in all, it was a very fun day.

I Love Me Some Fall

Friday was a good day. Jono was home, first of all, and that is enough all by itself.

After work we cleaned like mad to prepare our house for some co-worker pals. The men were outnumbered, but that didn't bother me one bit. We ate yummy Papa Murphy's pizza, watched Meet Me In St. Louis (applicable because of the Halloween scene that we all know and love), and then headed to the "Corn Maize."

And let me just say, that was the most fun I've ever had in an infernal maze. Normally I get dreadfully cold, lost, and whiney. That might explain why I haven't been in 4 years. This time, though, the two men strategized (blogger is telling me that isn't a word. That's a word, right?) and showed us through the maze while us ladies followed along blindly, giggling and joking and talking and having a wonderful time. I'm telling you, none of us were the least involved in actually getting out of that maze, and it was the most fun ever. Also, I learned that these co-worker pals will probably continue to be my pals, because they had to deal with a LOT of crazy, just-finished-a-long-and-lonely-week, act-like-a-maniac Rachel... and they STILL like me anyway. Whew. There's a load off my shoulders.

Afterward we went back to our house for some dessert. Mmmm. For old people like us, this was a long night. We pretty much just fell into bed after it all. But it was all worth it because I bought two baby pumpkins.

Ok, not really because of that. It was more of a bonus, really.

So, anyway. How do YOU like to celebrate the fall? How many pumpkins do you plan to carve? And will you come to my house and carve them with me? Great! Can't wait to see you. :)

Inspiration Drought

I guess that since I don't have anything incredibly interesting to say (surprise!), I'll just give a little update of my fairly predictable, yet happy, life.

My totally amazing husband is helping me turn our house into a home. We are painting a fun head and baseboard for our soon-to-be guest bed. We are also finally hanging all our pictures and shelves, and finding places for things that have conveniently been hiding in the extra room.

My grandma gave us lots of fun things, as she plans to move to a smaller place very soon. She gave me a practically unused sewing machine with all the extras you could ask for, including a big, tall, folding table with measurements for cutting material. (I guess I don't have an excuse to not finish that quilt that Joy helped me start forever many years ago.) She also gave us our choice of VHS movies. That may not sound very exciting, but these include many of my childhood favorites. Whenever we would go over there for Hanukkah the adults would end up talking (boring!) and us kids would go watch such classics as G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Claymation Christmas (ironic?). It was fun to take some of these home.
She also gave me a totally sweet Jewish Cookbook that her mother- and father-in-law gave her in 1964. I'm excited to dish up some old recipes this coming year.

We are still actively searching for a Bug. We came oh-so-close to buying one on ebay this past weekend, but the seller has been particularly unresponsive, so it seems like a bad idea. Time is ticking away, though, as my car is slowly (but surely!) deteriorating.

Hobby Lobby has tons of Christmas stuff at 50% off right now, so we are preparing for our first Christmas together. I absolutely love shopping for this kind of stuff. If it weren't for my very practical husband, I would spend a fortune. Luckily for me, even though he's oh-so-practical, he is also very sweet, and enjoys buying Christmas stuff to make me happy. You know...just not...TOO much stuff. ;)
I made sure to grab mistletoe this year, but I might need more...

Unfortunately, that just got me all excited about a holiday season that is still a quarter of a year away!

Let's share the holiday love, though. What are some of your favorite holiday traditions? What decorations would make it feel totally incomplete?
